An Oryx helicopter flying over Ovamboland in the now Namibia. The conflict on the border between Namibia and mainly Angola was known in South Africa as the Border War and went on from 1966 till 1988. Troops on the ground also called it the "Buch War" or just the "Border" or "Grens"
Band of Brothers – 101 Romeo Mike 101 Battalion unit in action somewhere on the Angolan/South West Africa (Namibia) border. The ‘Romeo Mikes’ meant Reaksie Mag (Reaction Force) and these units where designed as long range special forces of the South West African Territorial Force (SWATF) and their purpose was to relentlessly track and then surround insurgents.
This photo was taken about the fourth day after SADF had attacked Onjiva in Operation Protea.. Bats and Ratels had spent 3 days clearing the trenches of the big Fapla base next to the airport...tons of captured Soviet weapons and equipment was brought together and driven/loaded back to SA.
