I did this and could easily cut my wine corks in half lengthwise with just a kitchen knife.

How to split corks - put them in a veggie steamer over boiling water for just a few minutes. Pull them out with tongs and cut them in half with a kitchen knife. The steaming opens up the cork so it's not as dense making them easier to cut.
