Everybody Has a Story to Tell http://www.bearista.co.za/bearistablog/steller

In August, on a bit of a whim and a sniff of inspiration, I decided to run a month long course consisting of daily creative activations for stuck creatives. I put the word out there, and people seemed keen so I jumped right in and designed a daily creative exercise to send out for the month. It grew into something really special, and I ended up not just cheerleading from the sidelines, but really going through my own process of pushing to a new level of concentrated creativity.

I recently went foraging for wild flowers, berries and plants to use in my first ever eco-dyeing experiment. My previous blog post shows the details of what I found and how I prepared the bundles. To be honest I was rather disappointed with the way the colours came out, but having given it some thought I realise that perhaps my expectations were a little unrealistic. Just because the plant itself is really bright, doesn't mean the colour will transfer to the fabric in the steaming process. I…

When I heard Gumroad was hosting another Small Product Lab, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved. Everyone who signs up is working towards one goal, and one goal only - getting a product out there. It could be anything from a piece of jewellery, a painting, a music single, a podcast to an online course, a webinar or an ebook...

I'm putting together a series on quick photowalks in some of my favourite places in and around Cape Town. First up - Muizenberg. I could also have called this post 'Photo walks in Muizenberg that don't include the beach huts!

E-commerce Overwhelm... Lately I've had a few people ask me why I decided to go with Shopstar, so I thought I would share the rather rough thoughts I wrote while I was in the process of making a decision about which e-commerce solution to use for Furoshiki Dreaming, my own online shop.

If you’re looking for colour inspiration for your Squarespace website, I’ve put together 12 original colour palettes with a corresponding set of images on Unsplash. Have a look below and see if there’s something that catches your eye. Better still, set up your own Unsplash collection and colour palette (I wrote more about how to design a colour palette for your website here.).

My Thrifty Decor... You’ve spent far too much time on Pinterest looking at all the pretty things and you want to redo your bedroom. Or your lounge. Or your sitting room. And you want to do it right now. Then you look at the price of bed linen, throws, and cushions and weep. The dream gets put on hold.

Lioness Lean In... This business breakfast (a real first for me) was hosted by Lionesses of Africa - a community of Africa's women entrepreneurs and Standard Bank Incubator. Kristine Pearson from Lifeline Energy shared some of her fascinating, and at times tear-jerking, story of running a charity which distributes wind-up radios to rural communities in Africa.

Social Selling with Tictail... It seems as soon as you finally make a decision on something, a hundred other options suddenly show up. I have had this experience with my decision about going with Shopstar as an an e-commerce platform. I'm planning to write a little more about why I made that decision later on so stay tuned. Right now though I want to talk about a free online shop platform I came across today called Tictail.

A Content Marketing Workshop with Shopstar... Last night Shopstar hosted an content marketing workshop for their Shopstar owners and other interested parties. I was lucky enough to be there to present on the topic of Instagram for Marketing, along with Sarah and Delia from One Day Company, and Michelle from Hells Bells Digital.

On Finding Design Inspiration. Instagram isn't only about putting your images out there for others; it can also be a source of great inspiration. The South African design scene is certainly an exciting space to watch at the moment, so when I came across @local_za_design, an Instagram account dedicated to South African design, I thought it would be worth finding out a bit more about the person and the story behind the account.

Although I've been doing a lot of thinking about how creative businesses can best use Instagram to increase their reach in an organic way, I have only recently started thinking about paid Instagram advertising, and how it works. When I spotted Hubspot and Iconosquare's free ebook - The Essential Guide to Instagram Advertising I thought it might prove to be a helpful read. And so it was. In fact, if you're thinking about implementing paid Instagram advertising, then I highly recommend…

What About Hashtags?

What About Hashtags?

A hashtag, symbolised by the ‘pound’ sign or ‘#’ is a way of organising meta-data within an information system. There’s a technical description for you. Another way to look at hashtags is to see them as 'labels' that enable the same type of information to be grouped together. When it comes to
