Ian Smith was born in Selukwe, a small mining and farming 300km southwest of the capital Salisbury, now Harare. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1898 in search of gold. Smith was captain of his school's rugby, cricket and tennis teams. He enrolled at Rhodes University, South Africa, in 1938. During WW II he joined the Southern Rhodesia Air Force. After completing his flight training, he served in the Royal Air Force.
