The founding of the Voortrekkers coincided with the growth of Afrikaner nationalism in South Africa, then a member of the British Commonwealth. In some ways it was an Afrikaans-language alternative to the largely English-speaking Boy Scout movement, with its British heritage. The original concept of a youth movement amongst Afrikaners was formulated by Dr. C.F. Visser in 1913 in Bloemfontein. Wolraad Woltemade statue in the grounds of Old Mutual, Pinelands. (June 1, 1773 – Table Bay, Cape Town) The wreck of De Jonge Thomas lay in Table Bay. Wolraad Woltemade rode his horse, Vonk, into the raging sea to save lives of the ship's crew. He managed to rescue 2 sailors. He repeated this 6 times successfully. Woltemade rode out into the sea again – but this time too many sailors grabbed onto his horse. Both he and the horse, & the sailors, drowned.

On 19 July 1786 Graaff-Reinet was established by the Dutch East Indian Company (DEIC). The town was named after the Governor Cornelis Jacob van de Graeff and his wife Cornelia Reynet. Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa. It is well known as the home of magnificent examples of Cape Dutch architecture and over 220 heritage sites. Die Trekkers – onbewus daarvan dat hulle van die oewers van die Tugela bespied word – het met hulle dagtake voortgegaan. Eenuur die oggend van 17 Februarie het 10 000 Zoeloes op die Voortrekkers toegesak. Dit was donkermaan en die Trekkers het eers besef wat aangaan toe die Zoeloes tussen hulle was. Die voorste Trekkers is almal uitgemoor.
