Wolraad Woltemade statue in the grounds of Old Mutual, Pinelands. (June 1, 1773 – Table Bay, Cape Town) The wreck of De Jonge Thomas lay in Table Bay. Wolraad Woltemade rode his horse, Vonk, into the raging sea to save lives of the ship's crew. He managed to rescue 2 sailors. He repeated this 6 times successfully. Woltemade rode out into the sea again – but this time too many sailors grabbed onto his horse. Both he and the horse, & the sailors, drowned.
