Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was not present at the Battle of Paardeberg, but he was in South Africa for six months during the war as a volunteer field army surgeon, and I have used him as a character in my forthcoming novel of the battle.

In 1900 Doyle served as a volunteer field arm surgeon during the Boer War in South Africa.
