In November 1837 Dingane met with Piet Retief, leader of the Voortrekkers. The word "Blyde" means 'happy' or 'glad' in Dutch. It was named by Hendrik Potgieter in 1844 on behalf of the Voortrekkers. They were moving up North and East to find new grazing and farming land. The British had taken over the Cape, therefore, the Voortrekker crossing of the Orange River to live beyond the borders of the British Rule.
