Yuan Shikai was a Chinese general & politician famous for his influence during the late Qing Dynasty, his role in the events leading up to the abdication of the last Qing Emperor, his autocratic rule as the first formal President of the Republic of China, & his short-lived attempt to restore monarchy in China, with himself as the Hongxian Emperor. In 1909 Yuan Shikai was relieved of all his posts by the regent, Prince Chun, but retained army support during 3 years of exile.
Yuan Shikai was an important Chinese general and politician, famous for his influence during the late Qing Dynasty, his role in the events leading up to the abdication of the last Qing Emperor of China, his autocratic rule as the second President of the Republic of China (following Sun Yatsen), and his short-lived attempt to revive the Chinese monarchy, with himself as the "Great Emperor of China."
Part II. Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) In 1911, Sun Yat-sen was in the United States when the revolution broke out in China. Returning, he was sworn in as the first provisional president of the embryonic Republic of China. Sun Yat-sen was shunted aside by Yuan Shikai, a Manchu general, who quickly lost popularity when he schemed to be declared emperor. In 1921, Sun Yat-sen returned, formed the Kuomintang-Communist alliance, hoping for help and aid from the Soviet Union. Sun Yat-sen died in 1924.
