Wool carder bee - Anthidium manicatum - These bees, originally native of Europe were accidentally introduced into the United States in 1963. It is a bee, aggressive against males of its own species, which prefers blue flowers with long throats. Here it's feeding on my blue lobelia. These bees are leaf-cutters that use segments of leaves or flower petals (including those from my eastern redbud tree and rose bush!) to line their nests.
