The Americano, despite its name, was actually originally created in Italy. It is believed that in the early 1900s the Italians noticed that many of those who enjoyed this particular cocktail (known as the “Milano-Torino” at the time) were in fact, Americans. The drink was therefore renamed “Americano” as a tribute. Another thought is that the name came from the Italian word “amero”, meaning bitter.
