Granted that the same sentiment is felt in other martial arts, but the sense of belonging to a team is incredibly strong and has been for decades. In Brazil the rivalry between teams was very intense in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and it wasn’t uncommon for members of opposite teams to feel genuine animosity towards each other, with the eventual street fight occurring.
