This turquoise diadem was part of a parure that was a wedding present from Emperor Napoleon I to Empress Marie Louise his second wife. Originally, it was fitted with 79 emeralds and the current 1000 diamonds that total 700 carats. Altered in 1952 by Van Cleef and Arpels who replaced the emeralds with Persian turquoise, set in both silver and gold metal. Marjorie Merriweather Post gave it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1971.
