The Wall of Sound was an enormous public address system designed specifically for the Grateful Dead's live performances by audio engineer Owsley "Bear" Stanley. Used in 1974, the Wall of Sound fulfilled the band's desire for a distortion-free sound system that could also serve as its own monitoring system. The Wall of Sound was the largest concert sound system built at that time. [ #DeadHead #psychedelic #60s #70s ]

McIntosh Laboratory helped the Grateful Dead achieve their signature sound at concerts as part of the band's "Wall of Sound," whose artifacts will be featured in a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum exhibit.

The Grateful Dead’s 1974 “Wall of Sound” weighed 75 tons. I was at Santa Barbara when they reveled the wall…wow!

The Grateful Dead were carting around their GIANT Wall of Sound set up in 1974 - it was an attempt to get the sound levels & quality they wanted but the entire array proved to be too time consuming to set up/tear down and also very precarious at some venues - but WOW was it something to behold of the eyes and ears in 1974 while it was in use.

Grateful Dead Hollywood Bowl - I was there! Wandered around behind the stage where catering was taking care of the band members and crew. I seem to remember Maria Muldaur opened for them?

This space brings together an interesting range of items to promote experimentation of sound. Much more interesting than a "music" wall of old pots and pan that really only produce noise.
