The Best British Sporting Victories - The World Cup 2014 | Town & Country Magazine UK Virginia Wade Wins Wimbledon in 1977 It was the summer of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee when Virginia Wade won the women's singles title at Wimbledon. It was her third grand slam victory and a huge achievement at the time, although little did she know it would be 36 years before we saw another British champion.
This is the only known photo of Mary Virginia Wade, known locally as Jennie, taken in 1861 when she was 18. She is to the right. The woman in the center is Maria Comfort, 48 (Georgia's friend who lived on Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) and to the left of her is Georgia Wade, 20. Jennie Wade was the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg. Discover more history @ www.thehistorygirl.com
