"La polenta" (Venice, Ca' Rezzonico, oil on canvas, - painting by Pietro Longhi (1702- 1785). Pietro Longhi was a a Venetian painter of contemporary scenes of life. About the painting there are 2 young polenta-maker girls with their typical long wooden stirring spoon (known as mestolo) and their round-bottom copper pot known as "paiolo", where water is heated and cornmeal sprinkle into it. The polenta-maker is pouring onto a special round wooden board called "tafferia".
