In 1515 the great Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini painted the Dominican friar Teodoro of Urbino in the guise of Saint Dominic, founder of his order. "La polenta" (Venice, Ca' Rezzonico, oil on canvas, - painting by Pietro Longhi (1702- 1785). Pietro Longhi was a a Venetian painter of contemporary scenes of life. About the painting there are 2 young polenta-maker girls with their typical long wooden stirring spoon (known as mestolo) and their round-bottom copper pot known as "paiolo", where water is heated and cornmeal sprinkle into it. The polenta-maker is pouring onto a special round wooden board called "tafferia".
