What we don't know is whether the picture was intended as a devotional image of the dead saint that Bellini made more lifelike by using a specific living model, or whether it was meant to commemorate Fra Teodoro's own sanctity by identifying him with Saint…
"La polenta" (Venice, Ca' Rezzonico, oil on canvas, - painting by Pietro Longhi (1702- 1785). Pietro Longhi was a a Venetian painter of contemporary scenes of life. About the painting there are 2 young polenta-maker girls with their typical long wooden stirring spoon (known as mestolo) and their round-bottom copper pot known as "paiolo", where water is heated and cornmeal sprinkle into it. The polenta-maker is pouring onto a special round wooden board called "tafferia".
One of three oil paint portraits depicting Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, known as Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, will be auctioned on July 8 by Sotheby’s London. Made by famous Venetian painter Gentile Bellini, the portrait will be put on auction for the first time.
