Atlantic Ocean Floor Map. Groundbreaking map of the ocean floor created by technician Marie Tharp and Professor Bruce Heezen, image via The Earth Institute, Columbia University. Together, Marie and Bruce rewrote 20th century geophysics by creating the first systematic, comprehensive map of the entire ocean floor. This paved the way for general acceptance of the theories of continental drift and plate tectonics.
"'The Hole in the Road' became part of Sheffield folklore from its construction in 1967 to its demolition in 1994. Its 27 year history saw it as memorable facet of the city for a variety of reasons that merged together in a loose fashion. As a 'residual jungle', the inclusion of a large and solitary fish tank was part of the allure of the underground structure."
Chestnut-cheeked Starling or Violet-backed Starling or Red-cheeked Starling; or Japanese Small Starling or Red-cheeked Myna(Sturnus philippensis). Breeds on south Sakhalin Island (Russia), northern Japan and several small islands in the Sea of Japan (like Askold Island, off Vladivostok). Winters on Ryukyu Islands (Japan), the Philippines and northern Borneo. Fairly common in Japan, uncommon in other parts.
