Henrietta Marie de Bourbon (1609-1669)

Henrietta Maria of France was the Queen consort of England, Scotland, and Ireland as the wife of King Charles I. She was mother of two kings, Charles II and James II, and grandmother of two queens and one king, Mary II, William III and Anne of Great Britain, as well as paternal aunt of Louis XIV of France. The North American Province of Maryland was named in her honour, and the name was carried over into the current U.S. state of Maryland.

Kiplin Hall. Yorkshire. A unique gem of Jacobean architecture, with steep gables and towers in the centre of each side of its rectangle topped with octagonal ogival domes. Built of brick and reminiscent of Hatfield, although on a smaller scale. George Calvert, the builder, was Secretary of State to James I. Later Calvert founded the colony of Maryland in America, and named its capital after his peerage, Lord Baltimore. Visit the house and join the HHA here! HHA Friends visit free…
