The Law of the Twelve Tables was the ancient legislation that stood at the foundation of Roman law. The Law of the Twelve Tables formed the centrepiece of the constitution of the Roman Republic and the core of the mos maiorum (custom of the ancestors).

This is my favorite lesson for teaching about Ancient Rome, and it's the favorite of many other teachers as well. You receive a four-six hour unit plan for studying ancient Roman law through engagement and interaction between the teacher and the class and classmates themselves. More importantly, it is a complete set of plans for active and exciting learning that involves creating a mock Roman courtroom in your classroom.

You receive a four-six hour unit plan for studying ancient Roman law through engagement and interaction between the teacher and the class and classmates themselves. More importantly, it is a complete set of plans for active and exciting learning that involves creating a mock Roman courtroom in your classroom.

Students are given a copy of Rome's Twelve Tables (included) and a handout with ten scenarios.They will look up the law in the Twelve Tables that corresponds with the situation and use the law to decide what should be done. My students did a great job with this, and it helped them integrate a primary source into the current world!
