Tricyclic Antidepressants Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) act by inhibiting reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin by blocking the transporters responsible for reuptake of these neurotransmitters. This inhibition elevates the concentration of neurotransmitters in the synapses and triggers further neurotransmission.


Type of antidepressant. It is given if the depressed client has not responded to Tricyclic antidepressants and SSRI’s. This type of med interacts with a bunch of other meds, that’s why it’s usually not drug of choice for depression. Avoid OTC drugs, especially cold remedies, nasal decongestants, and asthma medications.
