Cob lessons: The wood stove is surrounded by cob for thermal mass, and includes a warm nook with shelf to culture yogurt. Not sure about the yogurt thing, but I guess I could learn. Love the cozy feel of this area and love the wood burning stove.

Passive House Basics - the passive house design is predicated on having an airtight, super-insulated building envelope. Then you add big windows facing south to allow the sun to warm a large interior wall (or thermal mass they call it). The wall will hold heat for winter time comfort. For summer time you add a screening / shading system for those windows, preferably outside with an open air space between window and shade.

Green Hammer designs and builds passive homes to meet the Passive House design build standard. Influenced by early solar passive house design, the modern super insulated passive house building requires minimal energy for heating and cooling.

Another masonry heater but this time he has a 500 gallon hot water cistern sitting underneath it. Increased thermal mass and hot water for days. No, my Bride would just hate hot running water at the cabin. That would just suck.

Epic Greenhouse Rocket Mass Heater - The 2-inch insulation board has be laid in on the floor of the thermal-mass trench, 3-4 inches of gravel added, and now the pipe has been assembled with a single screw holding each 2-foot section of pipe together. Remember, we are maintaining the 8″ flue pipe dimension (50+ square inches) throughout the entire system.

Tile will be the finished surface on the slab. Tubing could supply solar-heated hydronic fluid or conventional boiler fired water.
