The Virginian first aired in 1962 and ended in 1971. And here's an interesting fact - it was the first 90-minute Western series on TV! Actually it was more like a weekly movie feature.

Doug McClure The Virginian is an American Western television series starring James Drury and Doug McClure, which aired on NBC from 1962 to 1971 for a total of 249 episodes.

James Drury, The Virginian. We met twice. Once when he was in the ER at the hospital where I worked in Dallas. He later told me it was the worst pain of his life- kidney stones. A nice man.

James Drury's character went for its entire 9 seasons simply known as "The Virginian", and no other name was ever mentioned. My all-time favorite Western tv series, and I still watch it occasionally on DVD.
