In this article, scholar and author Montgomery studies the general origins of the verb ain’t in American English, but specifically in the dialect of Appalachian English. Even though this study is relatively recent, Montgomery prefaces the article with a disclaimer that little definitive study has been completed on the origins of ain’t in American Appalachian English. Its exact origins are a mystery, but this speech-based verb is still in wide use today.
