The raven was an important animal to the ancient Germanic people. The raven was always to be found on the battlefield, feeding on the fallen. Woden has two ravens, Thought and Memory, who go out daily to gather news of the world. The raven is one of the totem animals, the most intelligent of all the birds, and an element in many Germanic names such as Wolfram (wolf-raven) and Hrafnkel (raven-kettle).
