The Desert Inn hotel/casino operated from April 24, 1950, to August 28, 2000. it was the fifth resort to open on the Las Vegas Strip. The property included an 18-hole golf course; financing was by the Cleveland mob. Howard Hughes moved in on Thanksgiving, 1966, occupying top 2 floors. When asked to leave, he bought the place. It was THE place to stay, play, and be entertained by the likes of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Bobby Darin, Wayne Newton, and every top entertainer in the city.
