6 ways to make store-bought frosting taste homemade

I know. I know. Homemade frosting is always better. But sometimes, like today, you look at your calendar and realized you committed to bring 48 cupcakes to a school event and you have, like, an hour to get them done.

Make store bought icing taste like home made! For a tub of frosting, spoon out all of it into a medium-sized bowl. 1. Add 1/4 cup of powdered sugar 2. Add 1.5 teaspoons of vanilla 3. Using a mixer, beat the frosting for 2-3 minutes making sure the powdered sugar and vanilla is well combined. If tinting frosting with food dye, add the dye when you add the powdered sugar and vanilla. The powdered sugar helps to “stiffen” the frosting making it easier to use with pastry bags.

A tip for cupcakes with nice rounded tops -- fill liner 3/4 full, start oven at 350, then reduce to 325 and bake for 25 minutes

Iced Gems. Loved these when I was a kid! I used to bite off the icing & put the cookie part back in the jar. Needless to say, when my mom/grandmother took the jar out to serve to guests they were not to happy to find a jar full of un-iced cookies.
