Sept. 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key writes his famous poem "The Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland.


Francis Scott Key 1779-1843, September 1814, he writes what will become known as "The Star Spangled Banner" when he was surprised after non-stop bombardment of Fort McHenry that the British had still not taken the fort near Baltimore, MD. and the American flag flying over it. In 1931, it became the national anthem of the United States.
