John the Apostle was the son of Zebedee and the younger brother of James, son of Zebedee (St. James the Greater). According to Church tradition, their mother was Salome. The brothers were cousins of Jesus as their mother, Salome, was the sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Zebedee and his sons fished in the Lake of Genesareth.
