great passive solar design- I would plant row of deciduous trees in front of glass so that in the winter that could act as a giant trombe wall but be shaded to keep it cool in the summer. Trees that max out at 2 stories would allow south face 3rd level roof to accommodate panels!
The world's first Active House stands at the crest of an estate. Its south-facing roof is covered in solar panels and solar cells, which between them harness more than enough power to keep the occupants warm and the appliances running. In around 30 years' time, if designers have got their sums right, the excess electricity flowing from the house into Denmark's grid will have cancelled out the energy costs of building it, leaving a non-existent footprint on the earth's resources.

Eco living: the Leicestershire home that powers itself - "Traditional rooftop solar panels are joined by more experimental technology including “solar walls”, which preheat air before it is pumped into the home’s ventilation system, and an “Earth Energy Bank”, which stores excess summer heat in super-insulated underground pipes, releasing it during the winter."
