Sept - Oct 1781, The Battle of Yorktown, also known as the Siege of Yorktown. General George Washington's defeat of Lord Cornwallis's British army, causing the British to surrender and ending the American Revolutionary War. The British were being defeated by the American colonists, causing the British government to negotiate an end to the American Revolution, giving colonists their freedom.

Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis KG, known as The Earl Cornwallis between 1762 1792, was a British Army officer colonial administrator. In the U. S. he is best remembered as one of the leading British generals in the American War of Independence. His surrender in 1781 to a combined American French force at the Siege of Yorktown ended significant hostilities in North America.
