S - On Sept 1, 2004, a group of armed men broke into a school in Beslan (North Ossetia) taking children, parents and professors as hostages. At the end of three days of crisis, a series of explosions and a police raid, 376 people were killed, including 172 children. A Chechen military chief, Shamil Basayev, claimed responsibility for the action. Only one kidnapper survived. The autopsies revealed that 22 of his comrades-in-arms were drug addicts and cracked under stress due to lack of drugs.
