My students really struggle with rational numbers so I came up with a lesson to help them understand rational numbers visually and using hands-on. My students really enjoyed this activity because it helps my visual and hands-on learners. Students use a number line to see the sets and subsets of rational numbers and use colors to separate the sets and subsets.

Students are presented with multiple opportunities and approaches to practice classifying and analyzing the relationship between sets and subsets of real numbers in this 3 page activity.

Students use this matching activity to identify sets and subsets of real numbers, including rational, irrational, integer, whole and natural sets of numbers. Students match definitions, words, and numbers, including a cut and paste activity for the graphic representations of sets.

This card sort activity has students categorize 24 statements about the Real Number System as Always True, Sometimes True, and Never True. The statements relate to the different types of numbers in the Real Number System: Real, Irrational, Rational, Integer, Whole, and Natural. 8.2A Extend previous knowledge of sets and subsets using a visual representation to describe relationships between sets of real numbers

TEKS Aligned: 5.5A (Readiness Standard): The student is expected to classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using graphic organizers based on their attributes and properties.

This is a fun way to practice a skill. It can be done with a partner or individually.8.2 The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and use real numbers in a variety of forms.-Extend previous knowledge of sets and subsets using a visual representation to describe relationships between sets of real numbers-Approximate the value of an irrational number, including pi and square roots of numbers less than 225, and locate that rational number approximation on a number…
