August 15, 1771: Born, Sir Walter Scott. A hugely popular author in his own lifetime, Scott is generally regarded as the inventor of the historical novel. He did a great deal, as well, to awaken interest in the culture and history of the Scottish Highlands.

Rob Roy: Sir Walter Scott was a popular Scottish writer in the century. Scott’s most famous work is Ivanhoe and he also wrote many other famous historical novels. This version of Scott’s Rob Roy includes a table of contents.
