Siskin (Carduelis spinus). The male has a yellow-green body with a black crown. There are yellow patches on the wings and tail. The Siskins are easiest to find during the winter as they search for food. They enjoy eating conifer, alder and birch seeds. #Birds #UK
The Scandinavian tradition of putting out a sheaf for the wild birds at Yule/Christmas goes long back in time. Originally the sheaf was a fertility sacrifice to the old Gods. Therefore the sheaf was to be the last to be made after the harvest, and by the best crop. During Medieval times the church made efforts to forbid people to put out sheafs, because it was considered a pagan tradition.
