All accounts of the unit agree that it was prone to committing unlawful acts, although the extent to which they did so is debatable. Nicholas Rankin writes in Ian Fleming's Commandoes that they "rubbed higher authority up the wrong way", while topographical expert Robert Harling described his colleagues as "hugely disinclined to say take no for an answer from foe or fraulein".
