Reye syndrome is a very rare, but serious condition that is characterized by sudden brain and liver damage after the administration of aspirin to children and teenagers who are infected with a viral illness. While it can affect all organs of the body it seems to injury the liver and brain most severely. Reye syndrome is most commonly seen in children and teenagers aged 4 to 14 years old, although it can occur at any age.

REYES SYNDROME: Reye's (Ryes) syndrome is a rare but serious condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain. Reye's syndrome most often affects children and teenagers recovering from a viral infection and who may also have a metabolic disorder. Signs and symptoms such as confusion, seizures and loss of consciousness require emergency treatment.  Aspirin has been linked with Reye's syndrome. Children and teenagers recovering from viral infections should never take aspirin.
