It's a brilliantly dangerous con.  You support economic policies that keep people poor, undoubtedly resulting in more violence.  That violence then helps create the right environment for people to believe fear mongering gun propaganda, which spikes gun and ammo sales (which is great for the NRA that just happens to heavily back the GOP).  Toss in a little religion to control people socially, pander to racism, and that's basically the foundation of the Republican party.
