old fashioned swiss steak..one of my favorite comfort foods! I made this last nite for dinner and it was to die for! I also added celery to the sauce and carrots the last hour and sliced mushrooms the last 1/2 hour....served with mashed potatoes and homemade cornbread....it was to die for!
This recipe has been used and loved for many years in my family. The meat comes out so very tender! My husband, who a real hearty meat & potatoes man absolutely loves this. This makes its own gravy to serve over the meat and with mashed potatoes or rice.
Slow Cooker Swiss Steak. The original 1974 [not 1975] Rival Crock-Pot recipes called for 2-2/12 lbs. of round steak, a package of onion soup mix, 2 large cans of crushed tomatoes, and 2 cups of water. 8 hours on low. For a brown instead of red steak, substitute cream of mushroom soup for the tomatoes and a package of brown gravy mix for the onion soup mix. Both are easy and excellent. The 1975 Rival Crock- Pot version is totally different with carrots and celery and no soup mix.
