Rapid City and the Badlands (75 miles apart on Interstate-90) combine for a great list of must-do stops: http://www.midwestliving.com/travel/south-dakota/rapid-city/two-day-itinerary-for-south-dakotas-badlands-and-rapid-city/
So you are thinking about travel to the Black Hills this summer for a little fun family get away or maybe a retreat for you and your sweetheart, but other than Mt. Rushmore you don't really know where to start. Fear no more for I will outline here...
Deadwood, SD. The entire town is a national historic landmark. This is where Wild Bill Hickok was gunned down, and rumor says it's where the tradition of laying sawdust on bar floors began (barkeeps hoped it would hide spilled gold dust, which they could sweep up after closing time). It is once again a gambling town, so the flavor of the Gold Rush era is replicated, but it has a multitude of souvenir shops, gold panning, and Wild West re-enactments that appeal to the kids.
