(12) Africans are waking up to the fact that, if they want a new story to be told about Africa, they must be the ones to write that story. Africans must create a new library, a new catalog of who they are and who they can be. Unfortunately, the legacy of the "colonial library" is a difficult knot to untie. And oftentimes, cultural / political / economic realities complicate matters, limiting access to information and perpetuating the silencing of certain voices and narratives.
The English word, bead, derives from the Old English noun bede which means a prayer. Beads are among the earliest human ornaments and ostrich shell beads in Africa date to 10,000 BC. Over the centuries various cultures have made beads from a variety of materials from stone and shells to clay.
