On the spot

Japanese apricot, prunus mume 'Beni-chidori'. "It flowers some weeks before Japanese cherries, and has the charm and delicacy that some cherries lack. It makes a small, upright tree, about 3m (10ft) tall after a decade, and has sweet, deep-pink, cup-shaped double flowers which smell of almonds in late February. Plant in a sunny spot, close to a path, to catch the scent."
