Shad Thames, c1910. Much of the river Thames was lined by vertiginous warehouses creating dark canyons separated by slit-like alleys leading to ancient stairs, jetties and wharves. At Shad Thames a myriad of iron bridges spanned the street to allow goods to be moved across the walkways to warehouses inland.

'This flight of steps is part of a wide, steeply sloping front garden near Cheddar Gorge in Somerset. It was designed and constructed in 2004 and planted up over the following 2 years. The steps give easy access down the slope between large drifts of herbaceous perennials and low growing evergreen shrubs. '
