Ada "Bricktop" Smith (here c. 1925) a vaudeville entertainer and Paris nightclub owner, taught the Charleston to the likes of Cole Porter, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Consuelo Vanderbilt, the one-time Duchess of Marlborough. Bricktop, the daughter of an Irish father and black mother was born in West Virginia but her family later relocated to Chicago where she became aware of saloon life. By 16 she was touring in  vaudeville and relocated to Paris in 1924.
