Charlotte Edith Anderson Monture was one of the fourteen Native American women who served in the US Army Nurse Corps during World War I. Born to a Mohawk family in Ontario, Edith moved the US when she was unable to secure a place at a Canadian nursing school. Edith graduated first in her class from the New Rochelle (NY) Hospital School of Nursing in 1914. Although she did not train in Canada, Edith was the first Native woman from Canada to qualify as a nurse.
