Agriculture. c1941. A mural by Carl Morris, one of the Big Four from the Northwest School. Morris was a Californian artist who studied in Paris and Vienna, and life long friend of Mark Tobey. Check out the heavy dark lines defining these figures reminiscent of Japanese prints, and the distorted forms and landscape echoing El Greco and Cezanne. When I studied Fine Art in Cambridge, my professor, Andy Crocker was a painter whose style was influenced largely by Morris.
