Whitby Abbey over the town: site of The Synod of Whitby in 664 (establishing Roman practices as the norm over the Celtic & changing the episcopal seat from Lindisfarne to York). In 867 the monastery was destroyed by Viking raiders, & re-founded in 1078. It was in this period that the town gained its current name, Whitby, (from "white settlement" in Old Norse).
