Hashima is a small rocky island near the coast of Nagasaki in Japan. The island was Japan's main coal supplier for almost a century. After the island was discovered it was taken over by Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation who built accommodation for the workers directly on the island. Because space was limited these were small, crowded apartments, with shared kitchens and bathrooms. In 1959 Hashima island was the most densely populated city in the world with 5259 inhabitants. It closed in 1975
