In the Classical era, when the Mousai were assigned specific literary & artistic spheres, Euterpe was named Muse of lyric poetry. She was sometimes also referred to as the Muse of music.  The flute is her instrument.  Her name derives from the Greek words eu­ & terpô, meaning “giver of much delight" because she gives delight to those who hear her sing.
