Modest Mussorgsky (21 Mar [O.S. 9] 1839 – 28 Mar [O.S. 16] 1881) was a Russian composer, and a member of the New Russian School of Composers. An innovator of Russian music in the Romantic period, he strove to achieve a new sound in deliberate defiance of the Western musical standards. His works include the opera "Boris Godunov", the orchestral tone poem "Night on Bald Mountain", & the piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition."
