The Middle White Pig breed was recognised as a breed in 1852 at the Keighley Agricultural Show in West Yorkshire where Joseph Tuley exhibited several of his Large White sows along with others. The judges could not agree since some were not considered sufficiently large for the "Large Breed" class, nor eligible for the "Small Breed" class a committee was summoned to avoid being disquaified. The judges decided to provide a third class and to call it the “Middle Breed”.
